how to troubleshoot an oil-fired furnace
When there\'s a problem with oil
Several secure users --
A friendly trouble shooting program may get your stove up and running, saving expensive service calls for heating technicians.
To be on the safe side, try only the methods listed to avoid potential dangerous consequences.
Removing or adjusting any part of an oil burner, fuel line, filter, stove or electrical component can result in fire, explosion, electric shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, Burns and component damage.
Check the top of your tank-
Install fuel level gauge.
The gauge is a transparent tube with a mark printed on it that represents the fuel level of the tank indicated by a floating device inside the tube.
If your tank is old and not equipped with meters, tap gently down the side of the tank with a docking
The end of a screwdriver, spoon, or similar rigid tool.
When tapped, the empty part of the tank will make hollow metal sound, and the partially filled tank will make solid metal sound at the height occupied by the oil.
If the tank meter reading is empty, or the tap causes a hollow sound at the bottom of the tank, the oil needs to be delivered.
Thermostat detects ambient room temperature around the direct thermostat area and triggers furnace operation when the temperature drops below the level set by the user.
If the thermostat is placed in an area that is artificially heated--
Close to space heater, stove or other heating
Production equipment--
Remove the heat source, wait a few minutes, stabilize the room temperature and check the operation of the furnace.
If your thermostat is programmable type, replace the internal battery to make sure it works properly.
The thermostat battery should be replaced annually with the battery in the smoke detector and other home sensor devices.
If your thermostat also runs a central air conditioning system, make sure that the Select switch is set to \"heat \".
\"Electric furnaces require power to operate oil pumps, thermostats, internal electrodes, relays, and other electrical components.
Check the emergency switch--
Usually near the entrance to the furnace or at the top of the cellar stairs--
To make sure it is in the \"on\" position.
Also check if the circuit breaker switch of the furnace is on.
The circuit breaker is located in the electrical panel of your home and is often labeled.
The circuit breaker switch turned off after reset indicates a problem that must be solved by a heating technician or electrician.
Reset switch if the electrical switch, tank level and thermostat have been checked and the furnace is still not operational, the reset switch on the oil burner is the final trouble shooting task before calling the technician
The switch is red and is located on the top and side of the oil burner for resetting the internal CAD unit of the burner (
Electric eyes that sense the flame inside the furnace).
Instructions are usually printed on the relay box near the switch.
In general, you need to adjust one or more thermostats to the highest settings.
Then just press and release the reset switch once and wait a few seconds to see if the stove is working.
If not, a service call is required.
Do not press the reset button multiple times to avoid injecting oil into the stove. References (3)
