United Pacific Railway said it would replace a bolt on the track that derailed an oil train in Oregon
The Washington border, but the promise failed to ease concerns in the town, where the wreck triggered a 14-hour fire.
In a preliminary report released Thursday, federal investigators accused the Federal Pacific of failing to properly maintain the track.
The report noted that the \"lag bolt\" break was the direct cause and indicated that a better inspection would solve the problem.
The lag bolt is part of the fastening system that connects the track to the tie rod.
It can prevent the tracks from getting too far away, which can cause derailment.
According to a report by the Federal Railway Administration, United Pacific faces potential penalties for security violations.
The document previously obtained by The Associated Press came a day after United Pacific announced it would resume operating oil trains in the Columbia Valley later this week.
The mixed news shocked and angered residents of the town of Mosier. There are about 400 people in the town of Mosier, where the train derailed.
The derailment in June 3 released 42,000 gallons of crude oil and prompted evacuation.
No one was injured.
\"I think it\'s outrageous that they tell us it\'s safe,\" said Arlene Burns, mayor of Mosier . \".
\"We will continue to work until we feel that the issue has been properly addressed.
Federal railway administrator Sarah Fanberg said: \"The advanced electronic brakes proposed by regulators but opposed by the railway industry may make the derailment less serious.
Officials said they could have reduced the number of cars derailed and prevented cars from being punctured for the first time.
\"We are talking about upgrading the braking system from the Civil War era,\" Van Berg said . \".
\"It\'s not too much to ask these companies to improve their braking systems.
\"The American Railroad Association has lobbied against new brake requirements, saying they are too unreliable and yield too little to justify the price of more than $3 billion.
Federal officials say installing new brakes on locomotives that transport a lot of oil and other flammable liquids alone will cost much less, about $80 million.
United Pacific said the upgraded brake system will not affect the derailment of Mosier.
United Pacific spokesman Justin Jacobs said the company will replace the lag bolt with a sharp thorn in the curved part of the track nationwide as part of the track update plan.
The bolts will be replaced at 530 miles of the company\'s 32,000 kilometers.
Miles, he said.
Jacobs said that three days before the derailment, the joint Pacific inspection did not find any problems with the bolts.
He said the spikes will be more visible than bolts close to the ground, which snuggle in the gravel on the railroad bed.
Hal Gard, a rail and public transport administrator at Oregon\'s transport department, said he was told that Union Pacific will begin replacing bolts at the Ohio River Canyon on August.
The tanker that opened and burned has traveled thousands of miles from the Barken fields in North Dakota and Montana to the coastal refinery.
State, local and federal election officials in Oregon are demanding a moratorium on crude supplies. by-
Until the rail transit is fully understood.
There is concern that the failure of the lag bolt may be a symptom of a larger unknown problem.
State Transport officials say oil trains have been running in the region since 2014.
Gard said there had been little focus on failed lag bolts before, and in Alberta, Canada, in 2012, it appeared that only another example had caused the derailment, requiring further appearance to be added.
\"The unit train is big and heavy, the car is shorter, and the oil in those cars is swaying.
Is the other strain and dynamic force associated with it different? \" he said.
\"Now people are getting frustrated, twisting, kicking them and taking these things seriously.
Democratic senator of Oregon
Jeff Merck and Ron Sharma asked the federal railway regulator to stop oil train traffic using emergency terms before a better understanding of the derailment. Gov.
Kate Brown has again called for a halt to oil train traffic.
Federal railway authorities say they have no jurisdiction to ban oil trains in Oregon.
According to The Associated Press analysis of the accident record, at least 27 oil trains in the United States and Canada have been involved in major derailment, fire or oil spills in the past decade.

Steven Ditmeyer, a railway consultant and former industry regulator, said the derailment in Washington\'s 1990-year-old Burlington North involved cutting railway staples.
Investigators finally identified the overloaded car, the lack of lubrication between the wheel assembly and the body of the tanker, and the lack of enough gravel in the railroad track bed to bind the track along the curve to produce strain.
He said the tension loosened the nails that fixed the tracks on the tracks and separated the tracks, just as it had recently derailed in Oregon.
Van Berg said there are weight limits on tankers transporting crude oil and other products, but there is no indication that cars in the United Pacific have exceeded the weight limit.
\"Whether it\'s rail transport heavy cars or light cars, they still have a responsibility to maintain the railway,\" she said . \".
