less is more? jessa duggar shows off her diy 'minimalist' home makeover, revealing she sold off her unwanted furniture online - and put her box spring and mattress on the floor
A month after her big sister Jana revealed that she's remodeled their parents' bedroom, Jessa Duggar has given her own hope a bit of a makeover. The 26-year-old reality star and mother-of-two wrote on Instagram that she decided to go for a more 'minimalist' look in the house she shares with husband Ben Seewald, 23. With the transformation finished in metal the master bedroom and living room, the Counting On star share before and after pictures of her work.
'Here's a little glimpse into a Seewald home project that was completed recently,' she wrote on March 29. 'Decided on a whim that I wanted to become more of a minimalist.' She said she repainted her living room, which started as a light green and is now a light gray shade called Revere Pewter.
That was a bit of project, which she seems to have done all by herself while her husband was at a late night meeting. She said she went to Lowe's with her sons, three-year-old Spurgeon and two-year-old Henry, and picked up paint and supplies. She didn't finish painting until 1am. 'Ben was pleasantly surprised when he walked in the door,' she said.
She sold off some of their furniture, including the coffee table and end tables, on Facebook Marketplace, and used the money to buy a new rug, plants, and secondhand throw pillows. She also did away with much of the wall decor that was hanging, save for a photo above the fireplace. The 'kiddoes corner' is still quite cluttered with toys, she admitted.
'It may not be HGTV worthy, but it's the hub of our home and we feel like it's a massive transformation!' she wrote. 'Loving the lighter colors and having less in the room — and the fact that, by selling some things, we weren't out a penny and actually made some cash! It definitely makes this little the area feel a lot bigger!! And it's been wonderful having more floor space for the kids to wrestle and built things.' She then moved onto the master bedroom, giving it its own 'minimalist makeover.
' She painted the dark gray walls the same light color as the living room and did away with some of the furniture. 'We decided to sell our chunky bed frame, nightstands and lamps on fb marketplace as well!' she wrote. 'We didn't really use the nightstands when we were in bed, and they were just becoming random junk collectors.
'Originally, we thought we would get a simpler headboard/frame to replace, but while we were talking it over, it was actually Ben who said "I kinda like the simplicity of having our bed on the floor like this." I thought about it for a min, and decided I agreed! 'I realize this isn't for everyone,' she went on, 'but we do have a tall mattress and, with the box spring, our bed sits at about couch height. I LOVE IT. 'We've found that we all pile into bed a lot more to read stories or snuggle.
It-s easy for the two-year-old to climb up and down on his own, and if a little monkey accidentally falls out of bed it-s not likely to be an incident to call the doctor over.' She also brought the living room rug into the bedroom, added new retro photos to the walls, and painted her changing table with some inspiration from Pinterest. The rooms certainly look different, but the reactions on social media have been mixed.
Jessa's sisters Jinger, Joy, and Jill, and her sister-in-law Anna, have all praised the makeover, as have some of her fans. Others have had criticism and advice, though. 'All about the minimalist lifestyle, but this looks like a dorm room.
Sorry!' one commented on the pictures of the bedroom. 'Girl no! Google "low bed frame" and look how u can have that low bed and in a sophisticated adult way. Everything else looks good,' wrote another.
On March 1, Jessa's big sister Jana took to Instagram to share before-and-after photos of her parents Jim Bob and Michelle's master bedroom, which she and her younger siblings totally remodeled themselves. Later, she posted videos of her mom and dad's reactions as they saw the results for the first time. The Duggar family — Michelle, 52, Jim Bob, 53, and their 19 children — moved into their 7,000 square-foot Tontitown, Arkansas home in January 2006.
The family, including the small children, actually built the home themselves with kitchen the help of some contractors, putting together two Kodiak Steel Homes house kits to create the massive living space with one bedroom for the parents, one for all of the girls, and one for all of the boys. So the kids are no stranger to home renovations, which is why they were up to the task when Jana enlisted them to help redo their mom and dad's room. The old bedroom was dated and had been unchanged since their move-in nearly a decade and a half ago.
In addition to a large bed and en-suite bathroom, it included two reclining chairs — one which Michelle could use while nursing her many babies. In fact, the youngest child in the Duggar clan would traditionally live in the parents' bedroom for the first year or so of life, before moving on to the retro gender-appropriate dorm with his or her siblings. But Michelle hasn't been been pregnant since giving birth to her youngest, nine-year-old Josie, in 2009, so Jana felt it was about time her parents had a nice, grown-up room for themselves.
According to sister Joy Anna: 'Jana actually said that, mama, you worked so hard and you've never had an elegant room that feels like a queen's palace and we wanted to do that for you.' On March 1, Jana proudly showed off pictures of their hard work. 'This is what we've been working on the past week and a half — we surprised my parents while they were away and redid their room!' she wrote.
'So grateful to all the family and friends who pitched in to make this happen!' They replaced the old-fashioned dark brown wood bed frame with a more modern one with a gray headboard. They updated the bedspread and throw pillows, and added bedside tables with pretty lamps. The room was repainted a lighter hue, and the wall featuring the window was outfitted with cabinets, display shelves, and a cozy window seat.
In a nook that once awkwardly held a dresser, they built a brand new closet and set up a collapsible desk. Even the bathroom got more modern cabinetry, a new mirror and lighting, and new decor like a shower curtain, rug, and shelves. Jana later shared behind-the-scenes pictures and videos of the renovation in action, with many of her younger siblings brandishing tool boxes.
'My brothers are the BEST! They built the cabinets from scratch and worked so diligently on everything else!' Jana wrote. Her sister-in-law Anna — retro who is married to her brother Josh and is thought to live in the same house as Jim Bob, Michelle, and the kids — also pitched in. 'Anna is amazing she made the window seat cushion! Couldn't have done this project without each and every person!' Jana wrote.
Finally, Jana uploaded a string of videos showing her parents' reaction as they walked into their room for the first time after the renovation. 'We surprised my parents while they were away and remodeled their room for them. This is the reveal and them seeing it for the first time!' she captioned the post.
'Sometimes you have to find ways to give back to those that have given so much to you! We love and appreciate you so much Mom & Dad!' The two seem truly blown away by the work, with Michelle calling it 'stunning' and 'too beautiful to be true' and Jim Bob offering his eldest daughter an awkward side-hug. The family doesn't share front-facing hugs between non-married partners of the opposite sex — even among family — believing that the full body contact threatens to stir up impure and inappropriate thoughts. Throughout the video, Jana can be heard walking her parents through what they changed and the benefits of the remodel.
